We have visited this monument on the way to El Retiro Park. This 19.5 meter tall, granite gate is designed by Italian architect Francesco Sabatini in 1764 in the reign of the King Charles III. Its construction completed in 1778 and is now classified as one of the National monument of Spain. It has got well-proportioned three large archways and two smaller rectangular passageways each adorned with various features. The three archways are each decorated with a lion’s head. The Gate has four statues on the top representing four cardinal virtues: Prudence, Justice, Temperance and Courage. Bear in mind that it is located in the middle of a very busy intersection, hence it is almost impossible to get close to the gate but you can appreciate its beauty from various corners.
